I agree with Wilson that CCTV surveillance can be used to monitor people and sometimes help to solve crimes. Since many people find it intruding privacy, a lot did not install the CCTV surveillance at home. I agree with Wilson that the CCTV surveillance is hard to maintain and the expenses will be quite high, even if you install the CCTV surveillance in your shops, the theif can just disguise himself and if he wants, he can just destroy the CCTV as it is very vulnerable, making you to fork out some money to repair it. Even if so, the CCTV surveillance is proved to help in lowering the crime rates so CCTVs can almost be seen in every single shop as shoplifters would not have a chance to shoplift stuff without getting caught.

My Comments on Nicky Lim's post(ShengJie[25])

I disagree with Nicky that CCTV has no disavantages unless you are doing something wrong as i feel that even if you are not doing something against the law, there are dsiavantages of CCTV. It has to be used twenty-fours hours everyday and it would speed up the rate of global warming. This is a majog disavantage affecting our planet.

My Comments on Sheng Jie's Post. ( 39, Yeo Jireh)

I disagree with Sheng Jie that the recordings of CCTVs can be used to find out who the thieves are. Nowadays, theives will disguise themselves before they want to steal some stuff. Even if the CCTV take down their actions, they will not be able to identify the theif and thus letting him escape without punishment.

I agree with ShengJie that the CCTV would not be able to capture everything thats in a shop or house or other places. So, more CCTVs would be installed and the expenses of CCTVs is not low. You would need money to maintain it and as CCTVs are most probably on 24/7, a lot of electricity would be used up thus increasing your electicity bills and will also increase the speed of global warming.

If CCTs evolved in the future and have the destructive weapons that you think they might have, they would have to be developed by someone, and that someone would be smart enough to develop some sort of an antidope, as he wouldn't want to be killed by his own invention which somehow managed to give the CCTs brains and its over destructive functions.

The advantages of CCT surveillance is that we can use the things that it captures to solve crime or monitor people.
The disadvantages is that the CCT surveillance can spoil our privacy, for example if somebody is doing something in the bed, then it wont be nice for the staff thats is monitoring them on their screen. They are quite expensive and hard to maintain, for example if somebody throws something at it to block the view, somebody will have to remove it by hand.
I think that Singapore should not install to much CCT surveillance during the economic downturn as it is expensive and besides, they cant recognize everybody or somebody with a mask.
We might have no privacy in the future if CCT surveillance keeps evolving.

I agree that having the CCTs will minimise the search for the criminals who invaded the shop and even if the face was hidden well,we would be able to know how tall each of the criminals are and how many of them were there when it happened. This would help alot in the search for them.

My View on CCT Surveillance (Jim Tan, 18)

In my opinion, there are many disadvantages about CCT Surveillance.
Firstly, unless protected physically in some way, CCT cameras are vulnerable to external and internal harm. If the lens is covered by any substance, it may result in a blurred image that is impossible to be read. If a laser is pointed at the camera lens, it may temporarily blind the the camera, possibly damaging the camera if the laser is high powered. Complete protection from the lasers would require the use of black film, which would make the camera useless. The sight range of the camera is also limited and there are many blind spots. Usually CCTs are not well hidden and it easy for an experienced thief to predict the blind spots or hack the system.
However, there are also many advantages of CCT Surveillance. By installing them in shopping malls, it will cause many people to think twice before trying anything. Also, the tapes can be reviewed to check for any clues to a crime, which has proven handy in helping police solve cases.
This will intrude on some people's privacy as the CCT is turned on all day. However, it is safer, therefore it will lower the chance of a crime happening.
In the light of the recession, i think that the government should install more CCTs as although it costs alot of electricity, it would reduce the crime rate and not let any thiefs take advantage of the recession.

I slightly disagree with Jun Heng's Post as I think that there are much more disadvantages of this cctv surveillance like it can be facing the wrong direction of the crime like if the criminal is standing behind the camera to comment the crime, the crime cannot be caught thus, stepping up on the cctv surveillance will be a kinda waste of money if the position is not right.

In my opinion, I feel that the CCT surveillance is a good thing. When a robbery or crime was committed, the police can just take the footage of the CCT surveillance to try to find out who committed the crime or at least the police will know how it happened. CCT are mainly used to record down a certain period of time of the presence of peoples and their actions.CCT can solve crimes for the society and lessen the damage towards other possible targets.

CCT are expensive and they need electricity. CCT are computerized and can be hacked by proffessionals theives that steal for a living. Most CCTs are not well hidden because of the large size and can be noticed by most theives or shoplifters.

Since that economic is bad and most people are not earning enough money to support their livings, installing CCTs will probably burn a hole in their pockets. People could just take an extra step in protecting their shops by checking whether it had been locked or be more cautious and prepared against theives.

CCTV surveillance has many advantages. It is commonly found in shopping malls and flats. It is used to observe and record what is happening. With this, when crimes happen, the recordings can be used to find out who the thief is. This reduces crime rates and makes the people feel safer as people would think twice before commiting a crime as their chances of getting caught are very high.

However, CCTV surveillance cannot capture everything as it has a limited range. It also has to be switched on twenty-four hours everyday and this may also cause the rate of global warming to increase .

There are lots of advantages using the CCTV surveillance, but there are also disadvantages of using it.

The advantages is that the CCTV surveillance can record down what was happening at that time so you can trace back if you want/need to. The disadvantage of a CCTV surveillance is that a CCTV surveillance have limited sight/record range and there may be blind spots somewhere. To cover up the blind spots, a second CCTV surveillance will be installed to the area and thus increasing the usage of electricity. Increasing the usage of electricity cause you to have higher electricity bills and with more electricity used, global warming will speed up.

Even if you have CCTVs installed in homes and shops, the burglar/theif can just disguise himself/herself so that even if the CCTV recorded the incident, they will not know who did it and thus not allowing the police to close the case.

Another advantage is that the CCTV surveillance could sometimes scare the theif away as their actions can be recorded down and they have a chance of getting caught by the police thus it could reduce the crime rates in Singapore.

I agree with Jireh that CCTVS use a lot of electricity and contribute to Global Warming. Thieves will also not steal for fear of getting caught. However, thieves can still put on masks to cover their faces and CCTVS do not cover the whole area. In the event that there is a power cut or something wrong with the CCTVS, all video footage will be gone. Thus, CCTVS are just an added precaution for safety. When compared to security guards who will most probably not be affected by a power cut or memory loss, security guards are still a lot more useful as they can still try to scare off thieves with masks on. I also agree that CCTVS help to scare off robbers but they are not a hundred percent foolproof.

I agree with Jireh's opinion on the advantages of using a CCTV to catch criminals and thieves in the act and also to deter them from committing crimes. CCTVs make it easier to track and trace criminals as there is solid evidence that they did the deed and it will be easier to recognise them. I also agree that CCTVs are power consuming and is contributing to global warming. I find that something should be done to the CCTVs to make them more efficient and less power consuming. Finally i also agree that singapore should step in on using CCTVs to deter thieves and robbers and lower the crime rate.

There are many advantages in using the CCTV surveillance. It is used to observe an area or to record down what is happening at that time, at that place. And the recorded videos can be used as evidence to the people who have broken the law and one main example of people who broken the law are thieves. The recorded video could also could help the police solve crimes much easier.


Installation of these CCTVS in public places also helps to lower the crime rates in Singapore as thieves and robbers will notice these these CCTVS and probably will know that if they are to steal something, their chances of getting caught is very high as the CCTV is able to take down whatever he/she is doing so thieves and robbers will think twice on breaking the law and thus will reduce the crime rate in Singapore. I disagree with Zachary's point that criminals are caught easily using CCTVs because it really depends on how the criminal carries out his crime. If the criminal hid behind the counter and stole the money from there, it would be pointless if the CCTV were pointing in the wrong direction, thus not being able to capture the criminal's face. The criminal could also wear a mask while carrying out a crime, which is very common now a days. The criminal could also just hack the CCTV down if he were able to see where it was, thus destroying all footage of the crime. There are a lot more examples that can be raised, thus making the CCTV not so useful after all. However, it is useful for common everyday monitoring use, amongst other advantages.

My Comments On Tse Teng's Post

I agree with Tse Teng that CCTVs are an effective deterrent of crime and that some people use dummy CCTVs as an alternative way. Although it may be called a "dummy", it is not as expensive as the real CCTVs and could be more affordable to people. As it has a splitting image of the real CCTV, criminals might think that it is real and think twice. However, i do not agree that installing CCTVs at illegal gambling dens is an advantage as it helps the illegal gamblers get away with their misdeeds. Furthermore, I do not think that a gambling den would have enough money to buy a real CCTV.

My views on CCT surveilance (Jun Heng 22)

CCT surveillance have many advantages, and it can also be used to solve and prevent crimes.

An example of CCT surveillance solving crimes is the murder of james bulger, where James Bulger was abducted and killed.

February 12, 1993. James Bulger was abducted from a shopping centre in Bootle, UK, and his dead body was found on February 14, 1993.

With the help of CCT surveillance, his killers were identified as they were caught on camera leading James Bulger away from the shopping centre.

CCT surveillance can also prevent crimes. If the shop owner installs a CCT surveillance, whether or not it is functioning properly, the people who thought of doing something wrong would think twice, as they know there is a CCTV there that could easily catch them in the act.

However, despite its advantages, the CCT surveillance also has its disadvantages.

One disadvantage is criminal use of CCT surveillance.

Criminals may use surveillance cameras, for example a hidden camera at an ATM to capture people's PINs without their knowledge. The cameras are small enough not to be noticed, and are placed where they can monitor the keypad of the machine as people enter their PINs. The images may be transmitted wirelessly to the criminal. 

Thus, it would be good if Singapore would step up on CCT surveillance so as to apprehend the law offenders. This would help bring down the crime rate in Singapore, and make Singapore a safer place.

The issue of the invasion of privacy has been brought up, hence several laws have been made to prevent invasion of privacy. If person A uses CCTVs to invade person B privacy, person B may bring him to court over the invasion of his privacy, however that is subject to whether the ''privacy invasion law'' is made in that country.

There are many advantages in using CCTV surveillance. Thieves stealing and shoplifters shoplifting can be caught very easily with the CCTV surveillance. 1. What are the advantages of CCTV surveillance ?

There are many advantages of CCTV surveillance mainly monitoring and recording things. Used widely all over the world such as in shopping centers and in public transport places like mrt and in many other locations. Many people use it to monitor their workers working and to prevent theft and so on. I think that it is very useful as you can monitor things from far away locations and also record anything to be viewed next time and it can record everything without error and the record can be viewed at anytime and can be viewed as many times. It also can be stopped, slowed to be viewed. It can also help lower crime rates.

2. What are the disadvantages of CCTV surveillance ?

Although it is very widely used, there are still many disadvantages of CCTV like it runs on electricity so if someone or there was an accident where the power supply is cut or runs out, it is useless. It also cost lots and I feel that people should just not steal.

No I think that Singapore should focus more on implying the values on the younger generations and increase the penalty for caught for being caught committing crime.

The advantages of CCT surveillance is that you can have the record the video and can be reviewed many times with zero error unlike a witness who is a human and has a possibility to forgot or leave out vital information during interrogation. We can also stop the video for closer inspection as and when if needed. 

The disadvantages of CCT is that when there is a power outbreak or there the power supply is cut it cannot work as it runs on electricity. If the memory chip of CCT is removed it is also useless as nothing can be recorded.

Singapore should step up on the CCT as there are more and more crimes despite the heavy costs and it is the financial downturn as the CCt can help solve many crime and the thief can be caught and people will not be robbed off their valuables. Too cut down on the government side of the cost the government can ask the people to pay a certain amount to cover the government heavy bill. The people would pay as this CCT surveillance would ensure that their home or neighbourhood is safe and that the crime-doer would be caught once again ensuring safety and peace to the neighbourhood.

There would be no invading of privacy as the camera can be installed outside of the outside of the house but if the owner do not mind it can also be installed in the house so with the owner's permission there will not be an invasion of privacy.

I disagree with Nicky that there are no disadvantages in using CCTVs at home. CCTVs do make the resident of that particular house safer, but not the surrounding neighbours. The neighbours might feel that they are being spied on and may feel very uncomfortable. Relationships between neighbours might be broken due to some of them complaining that their privacy is being intruded. It may be useful for monitoring situations at home. but I suggest that it be used with discretion.

I agree with Raphael that the use of CCTVs can help deter the loansharks from vandalizing the homes of the debtors. I think that can give a psychological advantage as this helps instill fear among the people who are trying to commit crimes.
The CCTVs also helps keep the crime rate low and the people who are thinking about committing crimes may think twice about doing it.

The Advantages Of CCTV (01, Andre Chia)

CCTVS are very common nowadays and can be seen almost everywhere. CCTVS are found in shopping malls, in lifts, flats and houses etc. 

CCTVS are used mainly to observe what is going on and maybe even play back what happened at a particular time and place if needed. CCTVS can be used to catch thieves, loan sharks and their runners, and also let parents know what is happening at home when they are out at work. CCTVS can be hidden or obviously placed. Obviously placed CCTVS most probably deter thieves from trying to even rob the house and deter loan sharks from vandalizing the houses. Hidden CCTVS are normally placed in lifts to try and catch people who urinate in lifts. These CCTVS also help the police to solve many cases as they can playback and show the police who are the offenders and the people who rob or vandalize a place. Having these CCTVS installed at home also give parents a peace of mind when they go to work. As they have young kids and often leave them at home with their maids. In order to ensure that the maids do not ill-treat the toddlers as these CCTVS allow the parents 24/7 surveillance.

Installation of these CCTVS in common places also help to lower the crime rate in Singapore. As thieves and robbers see these CCTVS, they know that the chances of them getting caught is quite high so they will most probably give up and don't rob the place. Loan sharks also see the CCTVS and are scared to vandalize as they are afraid of getting caught. In short, CCTVS help the community a lot by scaring these offenders and preventing them from committing crimes and thus lowering the crime rates.

My Comment on Randal Thoughts [Lim Yu Liang]

Firstly, I have overlooked on what i was typing. Yes you were right. I already edited my post. What i was actually trying to say was that there was a need of lesser security guards, as the CCTV had replace the patrolling of guard. That is why, lesser guards are needed.

Secondly, when there are higher crime rates, it make people feel insecure as people might worry that if they go out to crowded places or dark spots, robbery, rape, murdering and others might occur. Thus, it will actually make people feel that if there is not really a need to go out, they won't at all. However, if CCTV are placed, it make people feel more secure as there is like someone looking out for them, thus they do not need to worry too much

I agree with Gabriel that with CCTV, helps the police and security guards.With CCTV, it will definetly be less tiring and less troublesome for the police and security guards as they do not need to go through so much trouble to identify the culprit. All they need to do is just review the footage on the CCTV and they can have a good view of the culprit and what the culprit did. With CCTV, lesser people would definetly risk committing a crime as there is a higher chance of them being caught.

My Comment On Amos' Opinion On The CCTV (Jonan Siak)

Firstly, I would definitely agree with Amos that security and crime issues now can be supported by the help of the CCTV all over the world and it is a useful tool used by the police in solving crimes and assisting them in their investigations. On top of that, as what Amos said, the CCTV also help prevent theft, shoplifting and surveillance. 

Secondly, I do not really agree that intruding privacy is that important as compared to resisting crime in the society. It is better to have a little of privacy intruded than allowing crime to take place. The CCTV is used only to scare away the burglars and preventing them from breaking in to the house. Plus, if the neighbors did nothing wrong, they should not ever be fearful of the cameras attached outside the house.

I agree with Jing Ren about the fact that crime rates abroad are reduced due to the presence of CCTV surveilance. However, i do not think that the CCTV cameras are invading our personal privacy and lives. It's not as if the cameras are placed in lavatories or at home where the people normally go about doing their own stuff. For the car license plate, they need the cameras to be able to see the numbers as evidence of a car speeding, whether the car passed through a junction when the traffic light was red.

Modern technology have resulted in CCTVs being made possible. They are very common to us nowadays and we are bound to see them everywhere we go.

The main uses of CCTV systems are for surveillance or to act as a deterrence to theft, and robbery. As many people fear being caught stealing or doing things that are against the law, thus, they might change their mind if they spot a CCTV in the vicinity. Having a CCTV camera can help the police or security personnel identify the culprit which makes the job of apprehending him/her much easier for the police. Thus we can say that CCTVs can also be used for identification purposes. I find that CCTVs should be used in Singapore, because it can help to make our lives much easier, for example, when we are sleeping at night and a loan shark who misread an address and comes knocking on our doors, he will think twice before vandalizing our house when he sees the CCTV monitoring him, even if he does so, he can easily be identified and apprehended. The same can be applied for thieves who are looking for a house to rob. CCTVs can also be placed inside of homes to monitor the maids and make sure they are doing their jobs properly. CCTVs placed in carparks and shopping malls will lower the rate of vandalism and thefts. Therefore I think that Singapore should use CCTVs in the light of the economic downturn and the rise of crimes

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors.

Firstly, i agree with his point that CCTVs help to make the job of security personnel, however i do not agree that the establishment does not need to hire security guards, the installation of CCTVs can only help that much, in the case of someone actually doing something illegal or stupid, we still have to go back to the security guards to apprehend them. The CCTV's can't catch them. Higher crime rates lead to insecurity, so? what are the implications? Please elaborate.

I think CCTV surveillance is very useful as it helps the police to track down criminals much easier as the video footage from the CCTV surveillance cameras may reveal the criminals identity. Also, with the CCTV surveillance, fewer citizens would try to steal as they can be easily be caught red-handed via the CCTV surveillance. Hence, with lesser people trying to commit crimes, the rate of crimes committed would definetly go down, thus demonstrate the advantages of the CCTV surveillance.

CCT surveillance

     It is not uncommon to see Closed Circuit Televisions (CCTV) in the lifts and along the corridor these days. In many cases, these hidden cameras have helped solved crime and deter others from doing it. CCTVs installed in lifts also helped in catching people urinating in the lifts and vandalism. The cases of loan shark harassment has also taken a dip recently.

     However, the privacy of residents remain in question. Many have misused CCTVs for inappropriate acts such as spying and invading one's privacy. It is also part of human nature to dislike being watched every time.

     If you did go through The Sunday Times yesterday, there was an article on residents using fake CCTVs to deter crime. This has also helped to reduce the number of crimes committed. Reasons being that fake CCTVs are cheaper and they look just like the real one. However, experts say that both the real and the fake could be separated easily through a trained eye and a close inspection.

     I believe that CCTVs should be installed at places at crime hotspots, but there should be a study of the area before deciding where to install them lest they invade our privacy.

My Opinions On CCTV (Amos Wong)

The world of technology is so advanced nowadays and security issues can be aided by the Closed circuit TV system which have been available for many years. Over the years, they had become very easy to configure, and easy to maintain, and they provide much more versatility and usefulness than just a few years ago.
The primary uses for CCTV systems are surveillance, traffic control, theft, shoplifting, employee theft, robbery deterrence and identification. These CCTV systems is also a mind war technique which is a way to install regid fear not because of the law but because of the enforcible law security cameras garuantee that you will be guilty before proven innocent due to the fact you were on tape.

However, the CCTV systems do have disadvantages. Firstly, privacy will be intruded. There have been a few cases in Singapore where people installed CCTV systems outside their homes and neighbors found it uncomfortable to have a camera that may be positioned in such a way that parts of their house can also be seen thus, creating social problems.

I think Singapore should step up on CCTV surveillance as the crime rates are going up in alarming rate. However, i think CCTV should be installed only on the street and not suitable for citizens for them to be installed in their homes as they are too complicated for home use. CCTV systems need maintenance and you need to review the tape yourselves if anything happens.

I agree with him that with CCTVs installed in singapore, Singapore will become a safer place and CCTVs can play a big role in reducing crimes. I also agree on the face that guards just need to be in the control centre and can see all the spots without tiring patrols or routine checks. But if there's a robbery going on, they would be a step late to stop the robber. And when guards are inside a control centre, it might be too cosy for them and they might slack off. If they don't pay enough attention on the screens, crimes will still happen. I think that routine checks and patrols still offers it's advantages.

My opinion on CCTV

Till this day, CCTV is very common all over the globe. It is largely used for surveillance and to deter terrorism. Although in many place crime rate has dropped due to the CCTVs, people might feel that their privacy are intruded. Now, dummy CCTVs are also sold. Real CCTVs cost about $100 to $400 while dummies cost about $4.50 to $50 and their very cost effective. Some malls have been using the dummies and commented that they have the same effect as the real CCTV. Although it does not provide surveillance, it saves a lot of money.CCTVs stationed in locations where crime rate is high can reduce the amount of crimes as the criminals wouldn't want to be caught on camera. CCTVs could save millions of lives and yours too.

The Advantages of CCTV Surveillance (Yuhao)

With the presence of CCTV surveillance, the government do not need to employ a lot of manpower to guard an important facility. Instead, they only need to employ a few to man the various entrance and exit points. The guards are also able to view all the spots that the cameras are covering in the control centre, therefore they do not need to perform routine checks and patrols which makes their job much easier and more comfortable. With CCTV cameras around Singapore, many crimes have been solved due to the video evidence provided from the CCTV cameras, the videos will give the police some leads or depict the actions that the wrong-doer executed. With the installation of CCTV cameras in banks etc, it deters many potential thieves from stealing as they are afraid that their actions would be seen and recorded on the CCTV cameras. Therefore, the cameras can solve crimes and also prevent crimes. This ensures the security of Singapore, without them, Singapore would become a less safer place.

CCTVs are used in many places for example homes, malls, banks and many many more places.
When CCTVs are present, it helps to lower the crime rate as when thieves see the CCTVs they will think twice on whether they should steal or not as they know that they will be filmed. The use of CCTV also helps to lower the pressure on the guards that are employed as instead of having frequent patrols, the guards can just seat in a room and monitor what is happening in the area.
The CCTVs help use to keep the the surrounding crime rate at low thus making us feel secure.

The CCTV is a device that is now used all over the world in shopping malls, banks, restaurants, schools, housing estates etc to increase security in certain areas and to monitor the places where the surveillance camera is placed. It is a useful tool also used by the police many times in their investigations to solve crimes. 

The use of CCTV has indeed many advantages to the society. Firstly, it can help reduce the crime rate in a certain district where the surveillance camera is placed. Often, when a closed-circuit camera is placed in an area, burglars and robbers would not dare to perform their dirty acts, knowing that the camera would capture their movements and eventually, get them arrested, therefore, helping defer crime.

Secondly, the CCTV can also help monitor places such as classrooms and offices to prevent people from committing theft. It can observe the actions of the students in class and the workers in offices to discourage them to steal or do something stupid that would not do them any good. 

Thirdly, as said above, it can also help police solve crimes and assist them in their investigations. Take for example, the murder of two-year-old James Bulger in 1993 was solved using CCTV. The CCTV recorded the killers leading Bulger out of a shopping mall to a railway track where Bulger was eventually murdered. The police managed to catch a glimpse of the killers through the CCTV camera, helping them to track down the murderers and arresting them.

Now, CCTV surveillance are largely used around the world. They are used tighten the security, to make sure nothing will go wrong.

Also CCTV surveillance help to boost the security efficiency. With CCTV surveillance, it also helps to make the guards' duties much easier. They do not need to move around and all they need to do is to sit down in the control room and observe the place. Also with CCTV surveillance, the company will need to hire lesser guards as they could just plant a CCTV surveillance.

When there is a CCTV surveillance, it also deter the robbers, burglars to perform crimes. However if the crime did happen, police however can still refer back to the tape to find out evidence, or leads for the case.

Without CCTV surveillance, everything would be so inconvenient also there would be a higher crime rate, thus making us feel insecure.

My thoughts on  CCTV's in Singapore (Randal Lim 28)

In todays society people are now relying more and more on technology to simplify the jobs that have to be carried out. On of this things is the closed circuit television (CCTV) . This piece of technology continuously streams video information to a screen that is most of the time located in some kind of a control centre. The CCTV helps to keep track of large places and helps the security personnel to observe people and places better as most of the CCTV's are equipped with a swivel and zoom function, and seeing from birds eye view its easier to spot things that are out of the ordinary than the person on the ground.

However after talking about all of it advantages, there are also disadvantages to the CCTV. In places like shopping centers and schools where there are many CCTV's, the sheer number of cameras means that unless the establishment is willing to invest in a really really big television the only way to monitor all the cameras is to have a system which rotates the feed from the cameras. This kind of system can be exploited by criminals like moving from one blind spot to another, another disability is that most basic CCTV's do not have a recording function, which defeats the purpose of the CCTV's if there is no one watching the live feed 24/7. 

There is also the issue of privacy, in large institutions, CCTV's are put in place to observe people and places however there are certain limits of observation, for example, in the past few years there has been a dispute of CCTV's being placed in toilets and this led to a heated argument about the appropriate use of  CCTV's. Some even said that CCTV's should be totally banned and that security should revert to the traditional patrols. I think that there must be a limit to surveillance. And CCTV's should be used wisely and not for morally wrong things.

My opinion of CCTVs in Singapore (Denzel Low [10])

The world of technology is so advanced these days, it even helps in the security of places in Singapore. One of these helpful pieces of technology is the Closed-circuit Television, or more commonly know as the CCTV. This gadget is simply a camera that can relay back to a certain screen live videos of what is going on in that current time. It is used in buildings all over the world to make sure that suspicious characters can be seen by the police. Now, even normal households are adopting the use of a CCTV to make sure that break-ins do not happen. However, the resident of that particular household may not be at home all day just to see if any suspicious activity is going on, thus, CCTVs are also capable of recording the videos that they take. Thus, the residents can later review the videos at a later time to see what has been happening. With the current economic crisis upon us and people needing money, crime rates are sure to go up and a something to monitor the household will come in handy.

However, a CCTV does come with its disadvantages. One reason is that it costs a lot just to install 1 CCTV, let alone multiple ones in a single house. The second reason is that privacy is intruded. The CCTVs installed in people's homes are usually installed outside to see the corridor outside the person's house. Neighbours might find it uncomfortable to have a camera that may be positioned in such a way that parts of their house can also be seen. Thus, it is not only a financial problem, but a social one. CCTVs do come with their pros and cons, so should people get one?

With the alarming rate of crime rates going up, I think that having at least some sort of alarm in one's house is definitely a good idea, but something sophisticated like a CCTV might not be worth spending on. With an alarm, anything that happens you will be notified immediately. However, a CCTV cannot tell you if burglary is taking place, rather you have to review the video yourself. An alarm is so much easier to set up, just press a few buttons and you are good to go. With a CCTV, not only do you have to mount it up on your wall, you still have to make sure it is recording your videos and that they are playable, which is a lot more hassle.

In conclusion, I think that CCTVs are not necessary for home use as they are expensive, hard to set up, and most important of all, invade people's privacy.

  The advantages of CCT surveillance is that crimes have been cut down by a rather large amount and it shows that it is effective in reducing crimes as people are afraid to get caught on camera doing a crime.

  The disadvantages is that people's have no privacy as the cameras are almost everywhere, and their every single move and even their license plate number will be tracked and can be seen, and not everybody likes being 'followed' all around.

  

  I think Singapore should step up on CCT surveillance if they think it's affordable. It is shown that it's effective in states like New York and Chicago where crime rates really dropped.

  As long as i'm not doing anything against the law and have nothing to fear, it's fine if there are more CCTVs around in Singapore. Citizens might also try not to be as ungracious as they were if there are cameras all around them. This might help improve Singapore's image as a more gracious society.
