Views on CCTVs (Tse Teng 07)
The advantages of CCTVs are that they could help the police solve crimes. It can also prevent people from doing crimes. Some shops will display a fake camera in their place of business with the idea that this will deter shoplifting, robbery or employee theft. The presence of a "dummy" camera can provide patrons or employees with a false sense if security that is not there. This false sense of security will result in the patrons or employees complacency, resulting in crime being unsolved. If the CCTVs can help police solve crime, it can also help people who break crimes. Illegal gambling den vendors can install CCTVs to warn them against the police. Singapore should increase the number of CCTVs despite the economic downturn. Due to the economic downturn, many people are retrenched and become desperate for money. They may turn into crimes for money. When there is a economic downturn, the crime rates will increase. During this time of uncertainty, the government should increase the number of CCTVs. Moreover, crime rates will affect Singapore tourism. We need to attract tourist to Singapore to spend and boost our economy. Invasion of privacy will not be a problem as CCTVs is for the safety of everyone. The public must understand that the government is doing it for our own good.
